Day 8
Nara
Japan's first capital and a short
train ride from Kyoto.

The majority of the temples are in Nara Park along with about a thousand tame deer, who are regarded as messengers of the gods.

Really greedy messengers, who like pigeons, swarm around you if you feed them. As Karen
here discovers.
Todai-ji Temple
Home of a really big Buddha in the largest wooden building in the world.

Front Gate above, temple below.

Sangatsu-do temple overlooking Nigatsu-do sub-temple and the city of Nara.

Kasuga Grand Shrine
Shinto family shrine of the Fugiwaras (they got to pick the empresses for quite some time, so let's just say they were influential.

There are several thousand stone and brass lanterns dotting the landscape on the way to the shrine.
