Katrina

The purpose of this website is to sing of the life beautiful. The possibilities for enjoyment in the world all around us. A book. A movie. Wine. Food. Friends. Song.

Some things are hard to sing about.

Katrina. It’s such a pretty name for such a wind. A typhoon. A cyclone. A hurricane. Sweeping to lay waste to an expanse the size of Europe. To blow the winds and run the rain into the levees and submerge the Big Easy. To devastate towns throughout the region. Leaving the survivors to pick at the wind tattered threads of lives.

There are plenty of websites that are talking the politics of the thing and while I do have an opinion, I don’t really wish to express it beyond saying that this level of incompetence required great in-effort at all levels of government.

The question is what next.

I’d encourage every American to write their Federal Representatives. Express your free speech.

I’ve already written once. While, it didn’t make me feel better, I’m not done yet.

I’d also encourage every citizen to write their state level representatives to urge them to require better disaster planning at the state and local level. To not have those plans sit in some cool cabinet in a state capital, but get the word out for who and what and where and how.

I don’t suppose I really need to urge people to give to charity. An enormous amount has been give, but this is a sorrow for the long haul. It will take years and time and love to ease this wound.

And for those who haven’t searched recently, Google has put together a special search page/cross reference to help the displaced and the concerned.

I generally like to end on an up note, so I’ll just praise thank all of the local relief workers that toiled in the night and the Coast Guard angels that lifted roof top survivors and everyone who’s given and everyone who’s going to give.
