Exploring Tahoe

One of the more amazing things about California, and for that matter the Bay Area, is you can be by the water in the morning and in few hours, you can be up in the mountains. In this case, due to some freak weather, in the snow.

In mid May, my mother and I took advantage of the one of the campgrounds with a lake view to have a bit of car camping. I drove up to meet her Saturday morning and we drove around the lake.

With all the recent rain and snow, the surrounding mountains were just breaktaking, but the time of year meant that the place wasn’t swarming with tourists.

There were almost empty sanding beaches and parks, all with amazing views.

About midway around, we headed up to Squaw Valley to take a look at their High Camp, where the something, something (like you couldn’t just Google it) Winter Olympics took place.

It was a surreal experience seeing people laying by an open pool in bikini’s drinking tropical drinks, while only a few feet away people were skiing. The ice skating rink had this insane view of the mountains and Lake Tahoe in the distance.

After heading on down, we continued our tour about the lake, hitting high points like Emerald Bay, and avoiding rocks in the road (the melting snow).

For dinner we bopped over the border into Nevada for one of the famous/infamous buffet dinners. With about twenty feet of food, there was plenty to choose from and I was glad that I’d gotten some exercise.

Since the clouds rolled in, we headed on down to scenic Placerville where we bought used books and then headed out to Gold Country wineries.

While not as well known as the Napa/Sonoma cousins, there are some very nice wineries hidden all up and down the foothills if your willing to take a look.

We visited some very pleasant places with some very tasty wine. There was music and wine and a good time.
