Books
Jaguar Princess by Claire Bell
Description: Fantasy/Meso American. Set in Mexico, prior to the
Conquistadores. A young slave girl's mysterious history brings her into
conflict with the increasingly violent priests of the god of war.
Out of print, but still a wonderful children's book for those who track it
down.
Actually, describing it as a children's book may be confusing. The
motivations are complex. The politics are believable within the context of the
world. The descriptions are lush and occasionally very disturbing.
The central metaphor of Mixtal (the main character) becoming other, literally
taking on the ability to transform as she becomes a woman is a classic motif.
The setting makes it new again.
An excellent read.
