2003 in Review
So, then the year in review.
Karen and Crystal bought a
house.
The year started with Karen and Crystal
discussing how a house was a possibility, but not until summer. We’d start
looking in May. Wait. Wait. Check stock prices. Cut expenses. Wait.
So, Crystal went to
Japan and Karen went to Mexico, which was almost a trip to China, but you
know SARS. And we came home and made photo albums and talked finances for a
house.
Then in May we went hiking, but decided that
we weren’t in the mood so we went to open houses instead. And we met Kathy,
our realtor, and she was pretty together, so we said, sure email us. We
started by looking in Alameda. And my, those houses are expensive.
And so we looked and we made an offer and we
didn’t get it, which is good, because we weren’t quite together on our
financing and then we went to the Buffy Philosophy
Board meet that weekend. And it was good and we all sang to the Buffy
musical. Plus there was a waterslide.
Then in July, we went to
Comicon, but before we went, our realtor
suggested San Leandro. So went and saw a house and loved its square footage.
Huzah. So we went to Comicon and while we were there, we made an offer on a
house - while dressed as Greek goddesses mind you. Run to phone. Run to the
fax. Sign. Fax. Sign. Fax. Long for minions.
And we got the house and there was financing
and agents who were out of town and other financing and this kind of loan and
that kind of loan and house.
And then we bought a freaking house.
Somewhere in there (two weeks after we bought the house) Karen got a job at Google
- where there are free lunches and massages and, okay, Karen was a contractor
at first, but now Karen’s an employee and Google is the last outpost of
dot.com employee perk glory. All hail the Google job.
Anyway, then there was painting and
decorating and building and house. House. House. House.
Have we mentioned that in 2003 we bought a
house. Then we became Partners and Karen turned 30 and Crystal turned 32 and
we had a party for all of the above. And at midnight, all of the over 30
people invited Karen to come from the kitchen (where the under 30 partied)
into the living room, where the over 30 partied and it was good.
And look Halloween. Actually, it was pretty
low key, but hey, post-house exhaustion.
And, and, and
2003 was a year in transition. The
expression of suppressed dreams painted across walls. Bold colors. The
stabilization of roots. A real job for a real Karen and 30 years spinning back
into a house that is all color and plans. Precious plans.
The future, 2004, all glistening and new and
waiting. Ideas and trips, waiting.
Plus there’s that whole Nazgurls thing, that
should be fun.
