Costume Shopping
in Sacramento
09.22.02
Way back in January, Crystal
and I ran away from home for the weekend to the Gold Country. On the way
home, we stopped in Old Sacramento and discovered a wonder - Evangaline's,
three full floors of everything costume and kitch. We fell in lust and
vowed to come back when they were actually open (only the bottom floor
is open year round, the top two floors of costumey goodness are only open
from July through October).
We infected Gina with our
lust and scheduled an open Sunday for shopping and the two-hour drive each
way. We picked up Gina on this particular brillantly sunny Sunday morning
and drove on up to Sacramento. (It has nothing to do with this story really,
but I must mention that Gina was talking to a friend the night before.
She bemoaned the fact that she could not join said friend for an activity
on Sunday. The friend replied, "I'm the one would should be jealous. You're
going to Sacto with the Danger Twins." I just love the fact that someone
thinks of us as dangerous. You are all encouraged to use this new nickname.)
We dropped Gina off at the
front of the store and went to park the car. In we dived for 2.5 hours
of costume bliss. We scoped out stuff we wanted on all three floors, identified
outfits we wanted to try on in each of the rooms, and generally drooled
over the amazing selection of accessories.
At this point, we broke for
lunch - pizza in the air conditioned comfort of Round Table which was two
stores down and blessedly cool in the 100 degree heat. After fueling up
for the home stretch, we peaked into a couple of other stores with nifty
crystals, beads, statues, and other exotica.
But soon we returned to the
true object of our affections, Evangaline's. This time through we tried
on everything that took our fancies - flapper dresses, harem outfits, pleather
bodies, naughty storybook outfits, and really fluffy crinolines. Our orgy
of dress-up finally ended about two hours later with the purchase of several
accessories and undergarments but no complete outfits. We all vowed to
return (me when I have more money) for other things desired but not bought.
The drive back was accomplished with a minimum of traffic and only a little
bit of getting lost (right at the beginning - it was very difficult to
find the highway onramp due to construction and no map).
It was a very satisfying
and fun day in our state's capital - from a costumer's point of view at
least.
